Disney is in the process of making a massive movie licensing deal with Sony Pictures that is promising to bring Spider-Man and other Marvel properties to Disney+ beginning with Sony’s 2022 release slate!
According to a new report by Variety, the deal will bring all of the Marvel Studios and Sony made cross-over films to Disney+, which includes “Spider-Man: Homecoming” and “Spider-Man: Far From Home.” This also includes the upcoming third Spider-Man film in the Marvel Studios and Sony partnership due to release either later this year or in 2022.
The deal, which will cover more than just Spider-Man films, will run through Sony’s 2026 theatrical slate and will call for Sony titles to run across Disney’s many streaming platforms. This includes Disney+, Hulu, FX Networks, ABC, Disney Channels and Freeform.
The agreement comes following Sony’s deal with Netflix, which gives the streaming service access to titles immediately following their release in theaters. As part of Disney’s deal, it includes receiving the film’s when they would naturally make their way to TV–about nine months after the start of a film’s theatrical run.
“This landmark multi-year, platform-agnostic agreement guarantees the team at Disney Media and Entertainment Distribution a tremendous amount of flexibility and breadth of programming possibilities to leverage Sony’s rich slate of award-winning action and family films across our direct-to-consumer services and linear channels,” said Chuck Saftler, head of business operations for ABC, Freeform, FX Networks and Acquisitions for Disney’s Media and Entertainment Distribution. “This is a win for fans, who will benefit from the ability to access the very best content from two of Hollywood’s most prolific studios across a multitude of viewing platforms and experiences.”
Le Goy noted that the deal was “groundbreaking” and reflected the studio’s focus on getting its movies distributed as widely as possible.
