On March 19th, the 2nd Marvel series coming to Disney+ will debut, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Much like WandaVision, this will take place after the film Avengers: Endgame from 2019 in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier will feature Steve Rogers, aka Captain America’s best friends from the films. Anthony Mackie will play Sam Wilson aka the Falcon and Sebastian Stan will continue his role of Bucky Barnes aka The Winter Soldier. The premise of the series is that after being handed the mantle of Captain America at the end of Avengers: Endgame (2019), Sam Wilson teams up with Bucky Barnes in a worldwide adventure that puts their abilities to the test as they fight the anarchist group, the Flag-Smashers.
One of the biggest questions I hear most often is, if Sam is now Captain America, why is the title still The Falcon and the Winter Soldier? Recently, while appearing on The Jess Cagle Show, Anthony Mackie was asked if Falcon would indeed become the next Captain America. Mackie said, “We don’t know that yet. The show, the idea of the show is basically, you know, and at the end of Endgame, Cap decided he was going into retirement and he asked me if I would take up the shield, but at no point in time did I agree to or say that I would be Captain America,” and went on to enigmatically remark, “So, the show walks the line of who is going to take up the shield and who’s going to be Captain America if Steve isn’t coming back.” Keep in mind, since the Captain America character debuted in 1941, there have been 11 other who have become the super hero besides Steve Rogers. Bucky Barnes and Sam Wilson are just 2 of those people. I guess time will tell who will take on the title of Captain America by the end of the series.
I think this series is going to be action packed with a lot of side humor. In the film, Captain America: Civil War, we got to see both Barnes and Wilson together. One of my personal favorite scenes in the film is when Sharon Carter returns their equipment to them before they assemble Team Cap at the airport. While Steve bids his farewell to Sharon , Sam and Bucky bicker over the position of Sam’s seat, as it crushes Bucky in the backseat of their stolen VW Bug.
Bucky Barnes: Can you move your seat up?
Sam Wilson: No.
But as soon as Steve kisses Sharon, both Sam and Bucky quit their fighting to give Steve nods of approval.
In the end of the below trailer, you will also see some of the back and forth between the 2, but when it comes to fighting for what’s right they are both on the same page.
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is scheduled to premiere on March 19, 2021, and will consist of six episodes. It will be part of Phase Four of the MCU.
