According to a new report from Variety, it seems The Walt Disney Company may be seeing even more changes to its upcoming film releases. Specifically, it’s highly-anticipated releases of Marvel Studios’ “Black Widow” and Pixar’s “Soul.”
As many Marvel fans already know, “Black Widow,” which was originally meant to be released earlier this summer, in May, may now be seeing an even later release date beyond its rescheduled premiere of November 6. These same sources are also revealing that Pixar’s “Soul” may miss its theatrical release entirely and shoot straight to Disney’s streaming service Disney+.

This rumored news is said to come from “individuals with knowledge of the situation,” according to Variety. However, we can’t say they’re surprising given the current climate due to the pandemic.
It’s true that approximately 70% of U.S. cinemas have reopened. Although, even though these movie houses are open to visitors, these companies are still struggling to get movie goers in the door–which could be why Disney may be looking to wait on releasing its next Marvel Cinematic Universe film.
If “Soul” were to go to Disney+ it is not yet known if the movie would sit behind a paywall similar to the company’s recently released live-action remake of “Mulan.” Most Disney fans know the movie was originally meant for a theatrical release. However, given the pandemic, Disney decided to move the film to the popular streaming service for the additional price of $29.99.

This may not have been the company’s original plan with the film. Although, given the circumstances, the film did go on to bring in a reported $33 million as the movie was streamed by over 1.12 million homes across the United States the first four days of its release on Disney+. Of course, it’s also worth noting that the film reportedly cost over $200 million to create, which ultimately makes the film a loss, given its earnings.
At this time, Disney has not officially commented on the fate of either “Black Widow” or “Soul.”
