“Disney’s Winnie The Pooh Gets Star On Walk Of Fame
by Parmy Olson, Forbes Staff published 4/12/2006
Bearing fruit: Dependably golden hair glistening in the late morning LA sun and beer belly peeking out from his tight red t-shirt, another old-time celebrity finally got his chance to be honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. That he was renowned for having battled a lifelong addiction–in this case, honey–may makes him rather at home amongst the more than 2,000 of other much-loved thespians and luminaries of the entertainment industry that line the glittery promenade.
And like many of his real life contemporaries, the 80-year-old Winnie the Pooh came from humble beginnings. British author AA Milne conceived of the character 1926 and named after a stuffed bear owned by his son, Christopher Robin Milne. Once a member of our list of Top Earning Fictional Characters, the bear raked in some $5.9 billion in 2002 for The Walt Disney Co. . He’s even been a money-spinner for companies such as Kimberly-Clark and Mattel .
It therefore seemed all the more appropriate for Disney’s man of the moment, Chief Executive Robert Iger Robert Iger to assure the diffident bear there was no more need for modesty. “You really are worth all the bother,” he assured him–or at least the performer in Pooh clothing. With any luck that diverted attention from the conspicuous absence from the proceedings of Pooh’s Hundred Acre Wood colleagues, Christopher Robin and the ever-fretful Piglet. Both, it was assumed, had previous commitments.
They would be forgiven for feeling a tinge of green envy. Disney said the honey-coveting icon was one of a select few animated characters to ever receive the honor of a star on the Walk of Fame. Which all rather appropriately marks the start of a global 18-month-long Pooh 80th anniversary jamboree which will feature a plethora of DVDs and merchandise. Watch closely as the pot-bellied star continues to go from golden bear to golden goose.”
