Today In Disney History ~ March 18th
Pirates of the Caribbean (POTC) was the last attraction whose construction was overseen directly by Walt Disney; he died three months before it opened. POTC also opened in the Magic Kingdom in 1973, at Tokyo Disneyland in 1983, and at Disneyland Paris in 1992. In Disneyland the original 16 minute long ride features the song “Yo Ho, Yo Ho (A Pirate’s Life for Me)” as guests cruise through the Pirates Grotto, the Fort, Town Square, the Burning City, and the Dungeon. The Disneyland version starts inside next to the Blue Bayou restaurant and features two drops. The ride has gone through several changes over the last 49 years as you will see in the videos below.
Below is the original Disneyland Commercial for POTC:
In 1968 Walt Disney’s Wonderful World of Color aired the episode “From the Pirates of the Caribbean to the World of Tomorrow” where that year’s Disneyland ambassador Marcia Miner took viewers on a tour of the latest attractions at Disneyland, including Pirates of the Caribbean.
Here is a video of the entire ride taken in 2015.
