Today In Disney History ~ October 2nd
The original Liberty Square Riverboat was the Admiral Joe Flower. This boat was named for Disneyland’s construction supervisor Joe Fowler. The boat was a sidewheeler. The Admiral retired after it was destroyed by a dry dock crane that fell on it. The Richard F. Irvine was the second boat. It was in service from May 1973 until 1996 as the Irvine, and was renamed The Liberty Belle in 1996 and is still in service. The Irvine’s renaming came after a overhaul that replaced everything on the boat except for the engines, boiler and hull. In standard Disney fashion though, the names of both original boats were kept alive. You can now ride the Fowler and Irvine ferries from the TTC to various Walt Disney World docks.
