The Princess Diaries is about 15-year old Mia Thermopolis (Anne Hathaway) from San Fransisco. Mia and widowed mother live alone in a renovated firehouse. The unpopular and clumsy Mia is picked on at school, but has a best friend Lilly. Right before her 16th Birthday, her Grandmother Clarisse (Julie Andrews) comes to visit from Genovia. Mia learns her father was a prince, and she is in line for the throne. The movie revolves around Mia being made into a princess inside and out, and her trying to decide if she will abdicate the throne. In the end, Mia decides to accept her role as Princess of Genovia while learning that being a leader is about being there for others and doing what you feel is right in your heart.
The movie is based on Meg Cabot’s Princess Diaries books, and was produced by Whitney Houston and directed by Garry Marshall. The movie peaked at #3 in the box office and grossed $165.3 million worldwide. The movie had a 2004 sequel “The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement” which focuses on Mia going to Genovia after college. This movie features one of Julie Andrews few moments singing after her 1997 throat surgery.
