Today In Disney History ~ July 6th
Captain EO ran in EPCOT originally from 1986 through 1996. The movie was directed by Francis Coppola, executive produced by George Lucas, and starred Michael Jackson with a score by James Horner. Captain EO is named for the Greek Goddess Eos.
Captain EO opened in Epcot and Disneyland in 1986, Tokyo Disneyland in 1987, and in Disneyland Paris in 1992. By 1997 it had closed in all four parks and been replaced by various 3D movies. In 2009 Disney announced Captain EO was returning to Disneyland in honor of the passing of Michael Jackson. By July 2, 2010 it was playing in all four parks. On June 30, 2014, Tokyo’s was closed to make way for Stitch Encounter. On April 12, 2015, Paris announced their version would be closing with no replacement announced. On July 4, 2014 Disneyland’s version closed to allow for previews of Guardians of the Galaxy to run, and on September 26, 2014 it closed again to run previews for Big Hero 6. On April 10, 2015 it closed in Epcot and Disneyland to allow for previews of Tomorrowland and then at Ecpot Inside Out previews were run. In April the Disneyland theater’s name was changed to Tomorrowland Theater. Captain EO is set to return to Epcot on July 19, 2015.
