Recently, we reported that the Starbucks locations in Epcot and the Magic Kingdom were getting park themed mugs. Well, as of yesterday, the Epcot themed ones sold at the Fountain View Starbucks was taken off the shelves. Here’s the explanation according to the Orlando Sentinel~
The design of the recently introduced mug included a purple-striped monorail, a color that was retired after a fatal accident involving two monorail trains.
In July 2009, the pink monorail backed into the purple monorail, killing 21-year-old cast member Austin Wuennenberg, who was piloting the purple vehicle.
The Epcot mug is part of Starbucks’ “You Are Here” series. It features key elements of the theme park, such as Spaceship Earth and World Showcase pavilions. The general color scheme of the mug’s graphics are in grays, blues and purples.
Disney and Starbucks had also introduced a Magic Kingdom mug in blues and yellows. There are plans for products themed to Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Disney’s Animal Kingdom theme parks. A new version of the mug that does not include the purple monorail train will be available eventually, a Disney spokesman said Wednesday.
We will let you know when the new designs become available! ~M
