Beginning today and through November 5th, my favorite group of all time, Boyz II Men will be taking the stage at at Epcot’s Eat to the Beat concert series.
What can I possibly say about Nathan, Shawn and Wayna that hasn’t been said already. They are one of the most successful groups in the history of music. In 1991, they released their debut album from Motown records, Cooleyhighharmony. The group was made up of Shawn Stockman, Nathan Morris, Wayna Morris and Michael McCary. The first big success from the album was “Motownphilly”. The song feature Michael “Biv” Bivins from New Edition and Bell Biv DeVoe fame, of which I was already a big fan so loved the song and had to get the album.
In 1993, the original album was revamped and rereleased with a bonus track, “End of the Road”. The song would be the biggest hit for Boyz II Men and remain at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for 13 weeks, setting the record. The song was featured in the Eddie Murphy movie, Boomerang. Shortly after they released their “Christmas Interpretations” album which had great success and included the song, “Let It Snow” with Brian McKnight. Also, in 1993, the group was on the television show, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” and sang their rendition of “Silent Night” from the Christmas album.
The follow up album was simply title II and featured such hits as “On Bended Knee”, “Water Runs Dry”, and “I’ll Make Love To You”. Some of the songs on the album were written by Kenny “Babyface” Edmunds, Terry Lewis and Jimmy Jam. This was when I saw Boyz II Men for the first time in concert. I saw them at the MGM Casino in Las Vegas. At the time, Babyface actually opened for them along with Tevin Campbell, it was an amazing show.
In 2003, due to health issues, Michael McCary left the group and the other 3 continued on as a trio. The trio continued to release albums and perform. In 2011, they released the album Twenty, which celebrated their 20 years in the music business. In 2013, they were part of The Package Tour with 98 Degrees and New Kids on the Block. They released their eleventh album just last month.
I found this video on YouTube of their 2012 performance and Eat to the Beat and wanted to share it. The video is from user nascarvw
