Today, Sunday December 15th, marks the 40th anniversary of The Pirates of the Caribbean attraction at the Magic Kingdom. The original attraction opened in 1967 at Disneyland, and it was 6 more years before it would make its debut in the Magic Kingdom. The fan favorite attraction was the first major addition since the 1971 opening of the park.
The attraction has stayed pretty much the same since its opening. The most notable updates were the addition of Captain Jack Sparrow and the other characters from the Pirates of the Caribbean movie franchise.
Did you know that Pirates of the Caribbean was one of the last attractions Walt Disney personally oversaw the creation of back in the 1960s? During planning, Walt constructed a team Walt Disney Imagineers that included, and now Disney Legends, Claude Coats, Blaine Gibson, X. Atencio and Marc Davis. In honor of the attraction’s anniversary, check out the video clip above, in which Walt himself shares his excitement on plans for Pirates of the Caribbean.
