Back on September 17th, 1991, the new sitcom “Home Improvement,” starring comedian Tim Allen, debuts on ABC-TV. Can you believe it’s been this long? I remember watching Home Improvement all the time, and it doesn’t seem that long ago! Time flies! The show centers on the daily trials and tribulations of Tim Taylor, a TV show host raising three energy-filled boys, with help from his loyal wife, his co-host Al and his illusive neighbor, who we only saw the top of his head. Based on Allen’s stand-up comedy act, the show will be one of the highest-rated sitcoms for almost the entire decade.
Among the cast … is Jonathan Taylor Thomas – playing Randy, one of Allen’s sons. He will later be the voice of young Simba in Disney’s animated feature The Lion King. The series will launch Allen’s acting career which will include supplying the voice for Toy Story character Buzz Lightyear! Yes, Home Improvement’s “Tim the Toolman Taylor” is our beloved Buzz Lightyear! I think this show really is nostalgic for so many people. It sparked one liners too…. “Hidey-Ho Neighbor” and “I don’t think so Tim” were two of them. This program was supposedly to take place near Detroit, because that’s where Tim Allen is from. It sparked my interest, being that I live in the same area too. If you’re a local, you also know that Tim Allen is the voice of the “Pure Michigan” travel campaign. Again, it sure doesn’t seem like Home Improvement debuted over 20 years ago! Wow! It’s fun to look back and think of these old shows that were so popular for so long, especially when they have a Disney twist to them!
