Last week Disney unveiled the trailer for the upcoming film “Saving Mr. Bank” which is due to be released on December 20, 2013. The film stars Emma Thompson as P.L. Travers, the author of Mary Poppins. Also starring in the film as Walt Disney is Tom Hanks. The premise of the movie is that after making a promise to his daughters to bring their favorite book “Mary Poppins” to the big screen, Walt must purchase the rights from P.L. Travers. He never imagined Travers would have no intention of letting Walt bring the story to the big screen and he really must work to get her to release them.
In 1961, Travers traveles to California to spend 2 weeks with Walt. In that time Walt will try everything to gain the rights to the characters. He will use imaginative storyboards and songs from the Sherman brothers. Unfortunately Walt starts to see the hopes of getting the rights slip from him as he realizes Travers will not budge.
After getting to know Travers and the story behind the creation of Mary Poppins. He will make promises to Travers and eventually gain the rights. Travers and Disney create one of the most endearing films in cinematic history.
Mary Poppins will go on to be released in 1964 starring Julie Andres and Dick Van Dyke. Julie Andrews went on to win the Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance as Mary Poppins. The film also won Oscars for Best Film Editing, Original Music Score, Best Song for “Chim Chim Cher-ee” and Best Visual Effects, and received a total of 13 nominations, an unsurpassed record for any other film released by the Walt Disney Studios.
