When heading to Downtown Disney, one of the most noticeable landmarks there is Planet Hollywood. The huge globe and sign are hard to miss. I remember back when Planet Hollywood was the up and coming restaurant. It was founded by actual movie stars, and it was all the rage. I know I couldn’t wait to try it out! Not only was the food good, but that atmosphere was great. Then, in the mid 2000’s, in my opinion, the food went downhill. I was disappointed, because Planet Hollywood seemed to have lost it’s touch. The service wasn’t even that great, what a let down.
Well, in 2009 we had the Dining Plan at Disney, and since Planet Hollywood was included, I thought I’d give them another shot. I was happy that I did. The food was really good, the portion sizes were decent, and of course, that atmosphere was awesome. Let’s talk about scenery for a second. For movie buffs, Planet Hollywood is the place to go to see movie memorabilia. They have movie props and costumes from everything from The Wizard of Oz, to Nightmare on Elm Street! Diverse, right? The last time we went in 2011, they had items from television shows as well. They had one of the famous button up shirts and a pair of khaki shorts worn by Charlie Sheen in 2 1/2 Men, among other things. Pretty cool.
If you have kids that get impatient while waiting on their food, then Planet Hollywood helps with that problem too. My boys, especially the younger one, really get antsy while waiting for their meals to arrive. At Planet Hollywood, along with the movie props, they play loud music and show videos on different walls. The kids love it. Ok, I love it too. It’s funny, because when we go there, no one at the table talks to each other, we’re too busy looking around at all the scenery!
Since the announcement for plans to revamp Downtown Disney, I had heard rumors that Planet Hollywood may be getting the boot. This made me sad. While I previously thought that PH had gone down the drain, I really feel they have redeemed themselves. Whatever changes they had made, seemed to have worked. It’s always busy in that place, I don’t think they’re hurting for business at all. So, in my opinion, taking Planet Hollywood out would be a bummer, to say the least. I guess we will see what happens. In the meantime, if you haven’t gone to Planet Hollywood in awhile, or have never been, I’d recommend that you give it a try. The food is decent, the atmosphere is amazing, and a good time will be had by all!
